SUMMARY:Flooding Brownbag Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Flooding is a recurring natural phenomenon for which riverside
communities need to always be prepared.\n\nNurture Nature Center is please
d to present a seminar brownbag event on Wednesday March 22nd from 12 –
1:30 pm.\nJoin us to hear two local experts speak about flooding in our wa
tershed and get your questions answered.\nDr. Dru Germanoski and Dr. David
Brandes\, Lafayette professors will present followed by a Q&amp\;A sessio
n.\n\n"Persistent Flood Hazards in the Delaware River Watershed"\nThis por
tion of the presentation will describe river hydrology and various mechani
sms of flooding in watersheds. The end goal will be to place flood hazards
into perspective and set the stage for a discussion of flood frequency an
alysis.\nDru Germanoski\, VanArtsdalen Professor of Geology and Environmen
tal Geoscience and Co-Chair of the programs in Environmental Science and S
tudies at Lafayette College. His recent research has focused on groundwate
r surface water interaction in watersheds in eastern Pennsylvania and also
in central Nevada.\n\n“Understanding the ‘100-year’ flood on our Ch
anging Planet”\nThis portion of the presentation will address questions
such as what exactly is the "100-year" (actual 1%) flood and how are FEMA
floodplain maps developed? We will describe the process by which floods ar
e quantified and mapped\, and discuss inherent uncertainties in this proce
ss. We will also explore the likely impacts of changing land use and chang
ing precipitation patterns on the 100-yr flood.\nDavid Brandes is Prof of
Civil &amp\; Environmental Engineering at Lafayette College and is co-Chai
r of the programs in Environmental Science &amp\; Environmental Studies. H
is recent research in hydrology has focused on the impacts of land develop
ment on streamflow regimes\, particularly the baseflow portion\, and the h
ydraulics of detention basins.\n\nFree to attend\, bring your lunch and qu
estions! Registration encouraged – 610-253-4432 or email Liesel@nurturen
