The Northern Tier Trail will be the longest east-west trail connection in Northampton County, connecting historic downtowns, passing through federal, state, county and local park systems, showcasing the rolling hills of our agricultural lands and connecting the Delaware & Lehigh Rivers. The trail will connect to major regional trails such as the D&L Trail, September 11th National Memorial Trail, Liberty-Water Gap Trail and the Two Rivers Trail. Northampton County has recently hired an experienced Consultant Team consisting of, Gilmore & Associates, Inc., Campbell Thomas & CO. and Mellon Biological Services, LLC.
We’ve seen through research that trails and outdoor recreation play a critical role in our economy. Throughout the Lehigh Valley and within Northampton County we know of the economic value that land preservation and outdoor recreation does for our economy. Nearly $800 million is spent on outdoor recreation each year in the Lehigh Valley, creating over 9,675 jobs in and outside the Lehigh Valley, while generating $58.9 million in state and local taxes. An estimated 25% of all tourism in the Lehigh Valley comes from recreation, the largest percentage in the state.
