Purple Martins are the largest swallows in North America and rely almost entirely on human-made nesting colonies throughout the eastern United States. In this Tap Talks session, explore why southeastern Pennsylvania is a stronghold for these remarkable birds and learn how ongoing research is helping guide their conservation. Discover how scientists track the movement of young Purple Martins after they leave the nest, why their dispersal patterns matter when planning new nesting colonies, and how these birds serve as indicators of ecosystem health. Learn how research findings can support conservation efforts, inform habitat management, and help agencies such as the Pennsylvania Game Commission strengthen Purple Martin populations for future generations.

This session is part of Tap Talks—a fun and informative series that highlights water quality and watershed-related topics through dynamic presentations by local water resource professionals and Penn State Extension Master Watershed Stewards.
